Still lots of snow in the backcountry: North Shore Rescue

By

NORTH SHORE (NEWS1130) – It may be spring down here, but it’s still winter up on the mountains.

A local rescue group is sternly warning people that if you go into the backcountry, you need to prepared.

“One of the biggest issues we see with hikers up high on the North Shore mountains this time of year is slips and falls on snow slopes. So, proper footwear is really important — sturdy boots,” says Douglas Pope with North Shore Rescue.

He strongly advises people take crampons, an ice axe, and a GPS when venturing out.

“Losing the trail is a problem because the trails are still covered in snow. It is difficult to navigate; know the area [and] bring map and compass so you can properly navigate it,” he tells us.

Pope notes there is still a lot of snow up on the mountains.

It’s a different story in the Lower Mainland; Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the South Coast, where we can expect temperatures to be three to five degrees higher than normal.
