EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – Zack Kassian had a goal and an assist but Ben Scrivens made 40 saves as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 in Ryan Smyth’s final NHL game.

The Oilers former captain announced on Friday he would retire following the game, after 18 seasons in the NHL. Smyth had two stints in Edmonton, and also played with Colorado, Los Angeles, and the New York Islanders.

The home team got off to a strong start with goals from Roman Horak and Jeff Petry on two of the Oilers’ first five shots. Vancouver outshot Edmonton 18-5 in the opening period, but trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Will Acton added to the Oilers lead on their first shot of the second period, before Shawn Matthias got Vancouver on the board with his 12th goal of the season. Kassian drew an assist on the tally.

Jordan Eberle scored on a powerplay to restore Edmonton’s three-goal lead before the second period was up.

In the third, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a clearing attempt go off him and through the legs of Jacob Markstrom to make it 5-1. Kassian scored with 11 seconds to play in regulation to round out the scoring.

Vancouver wraps up its regular season on Sunday at home to the Calgary Flames.
