Abbotsford Heat leaving the Fraser Valley

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – The AHL Abbotsford Heat will be leaving the city after the Calder Cup playoffs.

The City of Abbotsford has paid out millions of dollars in recent years to cover the team’s losses; it will pay another $5.5 million to close out the five years left on the contract with the team.

The Calgary Flames’ farm team says a new location has not been decided yet.

As for another AHL franchise calling Abbotsford home in the future, Mayor Bruce Banman says there are no plans to house another team, but he hasn’t ruled the idea out.

The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre will be rebranded the “Abbotsford Centre.”
