Bus driver punched by woman in wheelchair

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver bus driver is shaken but otherwise okay after getting assaulted by an un-expected attacker Tuesday afternoon.

The 42-year-old woman in a wheelchair started hurling verbal abuse at the driver while on the lift, says Anne Drennan with Transit Police.

“This bus operator felt that she was too aggressive. So he began to raise the wheelchair lift. As he did so, the woman jumped out of the chair, onto the bus and punched him in the side of the face,” says Drennan.

She then tried to bite the driver before folding up her wheelchair and taking off on foot.

Drennan says the attack caught the driver by surprise.

“Who would ever expect that someone sitting in a wheelchair would jump out of the chair, jump on your bus and attack you. So I think it’s safe to say that the bus driver would never have in a million years seen this coming.”

Transit Police caught up to her at a SkyTrain station.

She was then taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
