VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A man has been charged with his mother’s second-degree murder and the attempted murder of his niece.
Ka Chi David Siu, 33, is accused of attacking his 63-year-old mother, Yin Nor Hsao, and his 19-month-old niece in a gruesome attack at an East Vancouver apartment yesterday.
Hsao was pronounced dead inside the home at Kingsway and Joyce. Police say the toddler has potentially “life-altering injuries” after what police call a domestic dispute.
“She was taken to children’s hospital with multiple injuries… she had been dropped off earlier that morning by her parents; the woman that was deceased in the apartment is the child’s grandmother,” says Constable Brian Montague.
The VPD says Siu, who was shot by police, may suffer from a mental illness.
Police were called to the home yesterday morning after they received reports of a small child crying, a man yelling, and blood on the walls. They say when officers arrived, Siu confronted them with a knife.
Siu remains in a hospital under guard.
The VPD Homicide Unit is investigating Hsao’s death; since this was is a police-involved shooting, the Independent Investigations Office has also been called in.
