Will we have teleportation in 50 years?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Forget driverless cars — how would you like to cut out your commute altogether by teleporting to work?

In this edition’s of News1130’s World of the Future (insert reverb here), a new poll from the Pew Research Center and Smithsonian magazine shows we might be blurring the lines between science fiction and science fact when it comes to how we view the near future.

Need a new organ? Eighty per cent of respondents believe it will be possible to custom grow one in a lab.

“Almost 40 per cent think that in the next 50 years, we will have figured out how to do teleportation of objects, which is actually twice the number who think we will be able to control the weather,” adds Aaron Smith, senior researcher at Pew.

He also says people want their car to be even more automatic in the future.

“If you ask them, for instance, about riding in a driverless car, about half the public says they’d be interested in that, which might seem low at first blush but given our love of car culture, I’d say that’s a pretty sizeable number of people.”

Maybe you will be driverlessly driving on another planet; 30 per cent believe we will soon colonize space.

The report finds about six in 10 people think tech and scientific developments are going to have a positive impact on society in the long run; 30 per cent think they will make things worse.
