Calls for more rules surrounding vacation home rental websites

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Hotel Association is worried private homes and suites rented directly to vacation goers will give our province a bad reputation.

It’s calling for sites like Airbnb and VRBO to be regulated the same way registered hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts are.

The concern for James Chase with the Association is if tourists stay at one of those places and have a bad experience. “There’s a risk that we spend a lot of time and effort and money to attract people to our destination and they have a bad experience. It’s not tracked in that normal way as everyone else would expect.”

He wants standards to be the same across the province.

“From a taxation standpoint, logic would dictate that they are not contributing to the same tax programs that help market British Columbia to the world.”
