Vancouver and Seattle open Cascadia Derby at BC Place

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s the opening leg of the Cascadia Derby as the Vancouver Whitecaps welcome the Seattle Sounders to BC Place this afternoon.

Vancouver should be rested after a full week off, but they’ve also gathered some momentum as winners of four straight MLS matches. The Whitecaps enter the opening Cascadia Cup match with four straight MLS victories, while the Sounders are as formidable as ever, sporting a record of eight wins, three losses, and a single draw.

Seattle has also played a Cascadia match, drawing with Portland 4-4.

“We believe in this squad, and this team, so we need to continue to do that.” said Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted earlier this week.

“We’re going to have runs where we’re not playing as well. (We) have to keep the smiles on and keep positive.” Ousted added.

Seattle may just be the best team in MLS this season, and they have played like it, winning six of their last seven matches. Vancouver did take two out of three from the Sounders last season, including the match that clinched last season’s Cascadia Cup. Vancouver’s Kekuta Manneh became the youngest MLS player in history to record a hat-trick in that 4-1 triumph at Century Link Field.

Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson suggested Nigel Reo-Coker could be an important factor. Reo-Coker knows his team is starting to put something together.

“You can see the bond is really starting to come out. We’ve got that ‘never say die’ attitude, and it shows in our performances.” Reo-Coker noted.

The Cascadia Cup is awarded to the Pacific Northwest club with the best head to head record between Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. The Whitecaps won the Cascadia Cup last season.
