Water restrictions go into effect this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Warmer, drier weather means less water for you to use on your lawn.

Water restrictions take effect this weekend and will last through September.

As of Sunday, you’re being asked to water your lawn just once a week.

Even numbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday — odd numbers on Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday.

North Vancouver Mayor and Metro Vancouver Utilities Chair Darrell Mussatto says it’s more pressing, with the North Shore snowpack at only about two-thirds of normal.

“We’re at a little bit of the lower end, so if we do have a long, hot dry spell, we will have a few challenges but right now we’re still within the normal limits and we’re protecting against any dry spells that may happen in the summer.”

If a long spell were to happen, it could lead to more restrictions — like no car washing and no garden watering at all.

The fine for violations is $100.

“We’re still allowing people to water their vegetable gardens and their flower gardens whenever they feel they need it, it’s just lawns and green grass that we’re asking people to regulate. People have been very supportive of this and they know that it’s such a precious resource that we do have to save it for if there is a problem in the future,” adds Mussatto.
