Whitecaps battle Portland in Cascadia Cup match

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Cascadia Derby continues tonight in Portland as the Vancouver Whitecaps meet the Timbers. Both teams are trending upwards, going a combined eleven matches without a loss.

The ‘Caps have gone five games without a defeat, the most recent a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Seattle Sounders at BC Place in the first leg of the Cascadia Cup. Portland has a draw with Seattle as well in the Pacific Northwest Darby.

The consensus for the Whitecaps after the draw with Seattle was that of frustration. Vancouver did outshoot the Sounders 24-8 in that match. The Whitecaps’ Erik Hurtado, who grew up just outside of Portland, scored in that game.

“We just have to continue doing what we’re doing.” Hurtado said.

“Every game, we want to get points, especially away games. That’s how you get to the playoffs. We have to focus on what we’re doing, and finish our chances more often.” Hurtado added after training this week.

Hurtado has drawn the praise of his teammates as well for his recent play. Captain Jay DeMerit is one of them.

“He’s taking shots, putting them on target and making goalies make saves. Up front, that’s what you want to do first and foremost.” DeMerit said.

Portland’s most recent outing was a 2-0 road win over Chivas USA earlier in the week.

Nigerian striker Fanendo Adi, who recently joined the Timbers on loan, scored both of Portland’s goals. Adi has fit in extremely well, with two goals and an assist in his first three appearances.

Portland is one point back of the Whitecaps for fifth in the standings, but Vancouver holds two games in hand.
