Mosquito season has arrived in the Fraser Valley

By

FRASER VALLEY (NEWS1130) – The warmer weather means mosquito season is upon us.

The Fraser Valley Regional District has started its annual efforts to get rid of the pesky blood-suckers. Stacey Barker with the District says the mosquito program is once again starting a bit earlier than normal.

“The river has risen quite quickly,” she tells us. “Not quite as early as last year… but this is also an early season in terms of quickly rising water levels. It’s certainly required us to jump into full speed suddenly.”

“There are many islands within the Fraser… those are some of the areas that we concentrate on. But also, between Abbotsford and Hope, there is so much foreshore and so much cottonwoods, etc, where there’s prime breeding habitat,” adds Barker.

The FVRD uses a bacterial larvicide that targets mosquitoes and isn’t harmful to anything else.
