World Cup watching in the workplace has companies worried about productivity

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – World Cup soccer action is so popular here in Canada, some companies found productivity plummeting in the middle of the day yesterday.

On Saturday, the world’s most popular sport attracted a TV audience in this country of close to 3 million for the England-Italy game. Yesterday, those 3 million people were at work when the games started.

A new CIBC survey has found that right now, Brazil is the most-followed team in Canada.

So, what’s a soccer fan to do? Do you ask your boss to put the game on the TV in the boardroom, do you stream it on your desktop, or do you “disappear mysteriously” for a couple of hours?

Some companies have set up a room for workers to cheer on their teams. But it seems many people may have to catch the highlights when they get home, with some workplaces have put a complete ban on watching the games at your desk.

But die-hard fans say they’ll be surreptitiously streaming the action on their phones.

Despite being told not to, some say they’re going to try to stream the games from their desks. They say they hope their bosses are soccer fans, in case they get caught.
