‘One per cent apart on wages’ technically not true, says BCTF

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the teachers’ strike drags on, the BCTF continues to say the two sides are only one per cent apart when it comes to wages.

The union often says this when they are arguing that they are close enough for mediation. The province continues to disagree with how close the two sides are.

BCTF President Jim Iker now admits that’s technically not true and the one per cent is over different time periods. “We’re at five years and they’re at six. Like, I said we’re open to compromise.”

Both sides are still far apart on a number of issues, including benefits and class size and composition.

When asked if teachers would come down further on wage demands to get what they want for class size and composition, Iker said they’ve already come down a lot.
