Bouchard’s Wimbledon Run Falls Short

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –

Eugenie Bouchard had the eyes of the entire country on her at the Wimbledon Final, but it was the more experienced Petra Kvitkova who prevailed.

Kvitkova dictated the tempo the entire match en route to a clinical 6-3, 6-0 victory over Bouchard for her 2nd Wimbledon title in the last four years.

“It was really tough for me today, but I’m proud of how I played this whole tournament.” a composed Bouchard said afterwards.

“I feel like it’s a step in the right direction” Bouchard added, as she addressed the crowd.

“I don’t know if I deserve all your love today, but I certainly appreciate it.” she said with a chuckle.

Kvitova conceded just 37 points total to Bouchard the entire match. Bouchard only made four unforced errors, highlighting just how good Kvitova was on this day. Kvitova won the final seven games of the match, as Bouchard was playing from behind the whole way, save for an early 1-0 lead in the first set.

No Canadian had reached the Wimbledon women’s singles quarter-finals in the Open era before Bouchard.

The 20-year old Bouchard became the first Canadian to compete in a Grand Slam singles final, after reaching the semis at both the French and Australian Open this year. The US open is next at the end of August.

Bouchard, from Westmount, Quebec, is currently ranked 13th in the world, seven positions below Kvitova.
