Whitecaps FC beat the league leaders

By

VANCOUVER, (NEWS1130) – The Whitecaps stole three huge points from the best in MLS, the Seattle Sounders inside BC Place. It was a beautiful rocket that put Vancouver in front early. In the 12th minute Sebastián Fernandez scored with a long-range strike to make it 1-0. That would be the final.

Vancouver had looked ineffective in its last two matches, including a loss that ended a franchise record eight-game undefeated streak. The Whitecaps were revitalized against their Cascadia rivals, carrying much of the play and buckling down defensively when Seattle pressed in the second half.

Fernandez opened the scoring when he took a pass from Pedro Morales and launched the ball from about 30 yards out. The blast sailed past the outstretched fingers of Sounders’ keeper Stefan Frei.

It was Vancouver’s first goal since June 7, ending a two-game scoring drought.

There was a large group of Seattle fans among the loud, flag-waving sellout crowd of 22,500.
