Barbie has a new job as an entrepreneur

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Barbie is becoming an entrepreneur.

The 150th career for the doll sees her in a business-like pink dress, carrying a black briefcase plus a smartphone and tablet computer.

“Canadian female entrepreneurs compared to men soared a remarkable 30 per cent over the last year-and-a-half, and we think it’s important for little girls to see the message that they can see a female entrepreneur and aspire to dream big,” explains Erica Diamond with Barbie Canada.

Diamond says the latest Barbie is not a response to criticism over the doll’s image. “Children don’t see those issues and they don’t see the world that way. I think little girls know that Barbie is just a doll and Barbie is meant to inspire play and inspire girls to dream up new scenarios.”

This design honours Ruth Handler, who founded Mattel in the late 1950s with her husband.

The company is also launching a contest for girls under 18, with three bursaries of $2,500.

They have to submit their business ideas for a chance to win.
