The Rogers Radio Stanley Park Open main draw tomorrow

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – On the heels of a major success for Canadians at Wimbledon, it’s a big week for local tennis fans. The week-long Rogers Radio Stanley Park Open kicks off tomorrow.

Vicki Salter with Tennis BC is the tournament director. She is expecting some big crowds for the event this year.

While the tournament may not have the big names in the tennis world, Salter tells us around 5,000 fans could be on-hand to watch some of tennis’ up-and-comers strut their stuff.

“Monday is the main draw,” she explains. “That will continue on through to the following weekend. So, on the 19th and 20th, they will have both semis and finals. That’ll be a great weekend to be here because you’ve got your top players.”

“There is no charge; it’s all free admission,” adds Salter. “There’s plenty of spectator bleachers for everyone, as well as parking. Certainly, we encourage people to walk or ride their bike down.”

One of the highlights will be the celebrity challenge next Saturday afternoon; it features former Canuck Garry Valk and former BC Lions Brent Johnson, and will be hosted by News1130’s own Dianne Bankay.
