RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (NEWS1130) – Mario Goetze volleyed in the winning goal in extra time to give Germany its fourth World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday.

Goetze controlled the ball with his chest and then shot past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the 113th minute. Goetze came on as a substitute just before the end of regulation.

The Germans held a heavy edge in possession, holding control of the ball 64 per cent of the game. Each team fired 10 shots at net. Germany had five find the target, while Argentina did not have any.

It was just the third World Cup final to finish 90 minutes without a goal.

Germany is the first European nation to claim a World Cup title on South American soil.

The win is Germany’s first as a united country. West Germany won the World Cup in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

Colombia’s James Rodriguez held on to win the Golden Boot award as the top goal scorer, with six tallies. Manuel Neuer of Germany was named the Golden Glove winner as the top goalie, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s top player.
