Wildfire burning north of Squamish

SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) – There is a big wildfire just north of Squamish in the Upper Elaho Valley.

This one is 250 hectares in size and Fire Information Officer Mike McCulley says it was sparked by a logging company doing some work in the area.

“On the provincial priority list, this fire has been risk-assessed and it’s not high on the list at this time. So, the forest company will continue to work their crews through there and try to protect what timber they have down on the ground.”

He explains the backcountry conditions right now. “Whether you’re working, playing or doing industry out in the woods, it is extremely dry right now and this is a prime example of what can happen and some of the results so please be cautious out in the woods.”

McCulley adds there aren’t any people who live or work nearby, but if you are driving in the area McCulley says you’ll like be able to smell the smoke.
