TV Blog Buzz: Details about the new ‘Walking Dead’; watching Netflix as a job

By

The return of “The Walking Dead” is just a few months away and creator Robert Kirkman is beginning to drop some hints about what fans can expect in season 5.

The plot will quickly rev up in the first episode, which airs on Oct. 29, says Kirkman.

“We really hit the ground running. What I mean by that is that we very quickly deal with the situation that we left them in — this trapped, victim situation where they’re kind of at the mercy of the people of Terminus,” Kirkman tells Entertainment Weekly, and adds that there are big surprises coming.

“There’s a lot of big revelations that haven’t really come out that I think people are gonna be pretty startled by. There’s a couple other revelations that I think people might’ve gotten a little bit of a lead on. We’ll definitely be defining those in some cool ways and confirming some theories and shooting down others, which is very exciting.”

He also says protagonist Rick Grimes will start to mirror the grittier comic book version of the character that inspired the hit TV series.

“I know everyone’s been asking, ‘When’s that guy coming? When are we gonna see that guy?’ I can say with confidence that he’s here, and Andrew Lincoln is having, I think, a great time with it.”

It sounds like a dream job to many: official Netflix binge watcher.

Time magazine talks to Greg Harty, who gets paid to watch movies and TV shows on Netflix. He takes notes that help form the algorithm that creates recommendations for users.

You won’t hear him complain about having to occasionally watch B-list movies or shows he has no interest in.

“I come from a blue collar family and watched both of my parents bust their humps every day,” Harty says. “I’m not going to complain because I have to watch My Little Pony.”

Larry Smith is telling his side of the story.

Who’s Larry Smith? He’s the inspiration for the character Larry in “Orange is the New Black,” fiance to Piper Chapman, who’s locked up on drug charges.

In a 10,000-word online autobiography, Smith talks about how he met the real world Piper Chapman, whose name is actually Piper Kerman, and what the TV series portrayed accurately and inaccurately about their lives.

He describes the strange experience of watching the show for the first time at a red-carpet premiere, surrounded by loved ones and celebrities, and seeing their lives acted out on screen. Which, of course, would be just the start of their wild ride.

“Was it weird to relive some of the most intimate and awful moments of our lives with our families right there in our row, along with Ricky Gervais, two seats down from my dad? You bet. And it was thrilling. And totally unexpected. And, as bizarre as it is to see a teenager dressed up as Piper Chapman on Halloween, the true story that began for Piper in 1992 and for me six years later when she told me, ‘We need to talk,’ will always be stranger than fiction.”
