Vancouver mayor urged to play nice with CP Rail over Arbutus Corridor

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has sent a letter to people living in the area of the Arbutus Corridor indicating the City has yet to hear back from the CEO of Canadian Pacific Railway after reaching out in June asking the wishes of neighbours be respected.

Robertson also repeated his opposition to trains moving through the corridor, which CPR has said could be a possibility.

Allan De Genova says Robertson needs to change the hard line approach he’s taken and actually work with CPR.

He says that needs to include the Kits Pool lands, the First Nations area in Marpole, planning for affordable housing, community gardens, and bike paths.

“They have to work with CP, this is their land. You can’t tell somebody what to do with their land if they don’t want to do something with it. They’re willing to step up, CP have always wanted to work with the city, but the deal has been frustrated.”

In the letter to neighbour, Robertson says the city is willing to pay “fair market value” for the land.

In the meantime, people have been told remove anything that encroaches onto the corridor by July 31.
