Charges against former Surrey temple leader upgraded to murder

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The charge against a former Sikh temple leader has been upgraded to second-degree murder, after the death of his wife in the hospital yesterday.

Narinder Kalsi was taken off of life support yesterday afternoon. She was found with serious injuries in her Surrey home last Sunday.

Her husband, Baldev Singh Kalsi, was originally charged with aggravated assault; that charge was later changed to attempted murder. Today, it was upgraded once again to second-degree murder.

The 66-year-old was the president of the Gurdwara Sahib Brookside temple. He was removed from this post after he was charged in the case.

Surrey City Councillor Barinder Rasode says the community is outraged about Narinder’s death and the possibility her husband could be involved.

“The accused is in a position of leadership in the community. And when we decide to serve, I think we are — and should be — treated with a higher standard. The accused is someone who has shown leadership in the community and has chosen to set an example for others.”

Rasode adds this case is a tragedy on so many levels.

“It is a reminder that domestic abuse occurs at all ages in all communities and it is something we have to do a better job at eliminating in our community.”

Mounties say Baldev Kalsi has been assaulted while in custody at a pre-trial centre.
