BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A police officer who shot a man in Burnaby has given his version of events at a coroner’s inquest.

Ryan Jacob died after being shot three times last year.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Willam Wark says he was responding to a call of a man who threatened a woman with a knife on January 31, 2013.

He says he saw a man matching the suspect description walking along Hastings near Glenmore and ordered he get on the ground.

Wark says the man, who turned out to be Jacob, continued walking, eventually turned around, and pulled two knives from his backpack.

When Jacob began running at Wark, he says he fired three shots, hitting the 45-year-old in the chest.

The jury also listened to a police interview of the woman who reported Jacob threatened to kill her.

She could be heard saying Jacob had been helping her move before they went out for dinner.

She explained they were later sitting in the parking garage at her father’s apartment when he pulled out a knife from his backpack, saying “I could kill you right now and not even care.” She phoned RCMP shortly after.

Jacob is the son of Squamish First Nation Chief Gibby Jacob.

A five person jury makes up the inquest panel. They can make recommendations to help prevent a similar event from happening in the future.
