VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It is one of the highest honours you can receive from the city of Vancouver. Deputy Mayor Kerry Jang has declared Friday, Geroy Simon Day in Vancouver.

It will be a busy day for Simon. He will also be immortalized inside BC Place on Friday. The BC Lions are taking on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the former receiving great will have his name added to the Ring Of Honour.

“To be the last one to wear a number for the history of an organization is something that is truly special,” says Simon. “It goes to show the individual accomplishments, but you don’t do any of this stuff alone. We have had really good teams.”

He joins a handful of select players including Joe Kapp, Bob Ackles, Jim Young and Willie Fleming to have his number retired. He says it is still sinking in.

“I am truly touched about it. When I came here I just wanted to play. I never thought I would accomplish some of the things I have accomplished. To have the jersey retirement now is something that is truly special to me and I am truly honour by it.”

Simon came to the Leos as a free agent in October 2001 and he departed the CFL in 2013 as the all-time leading receiver.

“It is starting to sink in now. I haven’t really thought about it too much. I am not really a person who looks back an reflects that much. I just keep moving forward and looking forward to the next challenge. This is a great opportunity to look back at some of the things I have accomplished throughout my career, not only on the field but off.”

Kick off at BC Place on Friday is at 7 p.m..
