Feisty Nanaimo woman takes down burglar

NANAIMO (NEWS1130) – It’s not the size of the person in the fight but the size of the fight in the person. One woman in Nanaimo learned that after fending off a burglar in the middle of the night. Constable Gary O’Brien says Jamie Fawcett was in bed when she was startled by a man who came in through her window. The 31 year-old, 5’2 woman started yelling at the man who was at least 6 inches taller, and then he took off.

“She chased after him, she was barefoot also. She chased him about three houses down, grabbed onto his shirt but he wiggled free. So she figured the chase is over. She went back to her house to call 9-1-1. But the guy came back again!” explains O’Brien.

He says again she took matters into her own hands. “This time she leaps out the front door, chases him. She’s got her shoes on now, she chases him and does a foot sweep, and she tackles the guy.”

A man on a motorcycle saw what was happening and called police. Officer showed up to make the arrest. A 22 year-old man is charged with one count of break and enter.

Constable O’Brien does not advise people to catch crooks on their own but says he’s amazed by what she was able to do. “We want to make sure here that we never advocate anybody going hands on with anybody but in this particular case, it was a fight or flight syndrome and she kicked into action and she did what she did and she resolved the incident.”
