Only one home still under evacuation order due to Smith Creek wildfire

WEST KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – Just one home remains under an evacuation order in West Kelowna as crews continue to work on the Smith Creek wildfire.

However, today’s conditions could be a problem, according to fire information officer Tracy Wynnyk. “We are looking at some higher temperatures today, which will increase fire activity in the afternoon.”

The fire is still 260 hectares in size and about 60 per cent contained. Eighty firefighters and 27 plane and helicopter pilots are fighting the blaze.

“What we’re hoping is people will refrain from trying to enter into those areas,” explains Wynnyk. “The RCMP will be monitoring various access points.”

At the fire’s peak, 2,500 people were ordered to leave their homes.

Elsewhere in the province, a campfire ban is being lifted around Clearwater as of noon tomorrow due to rain over the past few days.
