PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Almost one year since a teenager was run down in Port Coquitlam, there has been an arrest in the case.

Irwin Richard Franz, 73, of Port Coquitlam has been charged with failing to stay at the scene of an accident in relation to the death of Annie Leung.

The 16-year-old died in September of 2013 after she was hit at the intersection of Mary Hill and Pitt River Road.

The suspect left the scene after the crash.

A few weeks after her death, her parents made a public plea for the driver to come forward. They said they are willing to forgive whoever is responsible.

Her family has asked for privacy now that charges have been recommended, but RCMP Corporal Jamie Cheung says he hopes the latest developments will help bring the family some closure.

Police had little to go on and released a short video of someone who briefly stopped a truck after the crash.

Chung says several search warrants were also executed and that staff from Victim Services will continue to work with the girl’s family as they deal with the tragedy.

Franz is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Aug. 25.
