BC wildfire crews getting ready for more dry conditions in the week ahead

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many of the evacuation orders and alerts have been lifted in BC, but crews are still trying to get a handle on more than 100 wildfires.

And after some much-needed rain, there is hot weather in the forecast again.

Fire Information Officer Jill Kelsh is hoping the upcoming weather won’t cancel out the progress they’ve made over the past few rainy days.

“We do understand that it is about to get warmer and hotter throughout the weekend and looking into next week. What we’re doing is taking advantage of the window that we have to use our heavier equipment and our crews to the best of our ability,” says Kelsh.

“Crews have been able to get in there and get water sources set up for all of our fires. With that said, we are looking for things to heat up. We’re definitely going to make sure we have as much guard on our fires before they potentially pick up in activity,” she adds.

One fire of concern is west of Chetwynd at almost 16,000 hectares. It is not contained.

The biggest BC fire is near Tumbler Ridge; it’s more than 33,000 hectares.

Teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario are still here to help.
