Local protesters angry about innocent victims in Gaza

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The alarming number of deaths in Gaza prompted over a hundred people to protest in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery Friday evening.

The occasion was marked by chants of “Freedom for Gaza,” a minute of silence, and the names of some of the victims read aloud.

Many in the crowd were visibly upset and angry with the number of women and children caught up in the violence.

“I don’t like innocent people being killed and nobody saying anything about it,” said one man.

An eight-year-old boy brought his handmade sign to show how he feels.

“It says ‘Stop Killing Children’ and then it has two hand prints, which are mine in red paint.”

Others shared stories of how the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories and the blockade of Gaza have impacted the health and well-being of their family members.

“The violence continues. There is a huge onslaught of violence right now, but the daily reality is people being shot and killed,” said one woman, whose dying father-in-law wasn’t allowed into Gaza to say goodbye to family members.

Nearly 900 people have been killed in Gaza since the latest round of violence began in early July. Tens of thousands have been left homeless due to Israeli airstrikes and shelling directed at Gaza.
