VPD to be out in full force for Celebration of Light tomorrow

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Past years have been a success and Vancouver Police are hoping for the same as the Celebration of Light kicks off tomorrow.

With 300,000 people expected to crowd the downtown core, VPD Chief Jim Chu is reminding you that if you’re caught with open booze, you could be fined $230.

“It is illegal to smoke on beaches, on the seawall or on public parks. The fine for that is $250,” he adds.

Officers will be patrolling the beaches and downtown area on foot, horseback, bicycle, and the water, as well as from the air.

The Celebration of Light is touted as a family-oriented event, and that’s how police want to keep it.

“If there’s something that we see or know in advance, we’ll be vigilant. We’ll monitor it carefully and do our best to not let that situation result in other people being hurt,” says Chu.
