McCallum and Hepner neck-and-neck in Surrey’s mayoral race: poll

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It looks like politics isn’t taking the summer off in Surrey. A new poll finds voters are already firming up their choices for mayor in the fall civic election.

The Insights West survey suggests former Mayor Doug McCallum still enjoys more than a fair bit of name recognition, nearly nine years after he last held office.

“There’s roughly as many residents who say they are likely to vote for him at this point as those who say they are likely to vote for Linda Hepner,” says Mario Canseco with the pollster.

The poll finds 40 per cent of voters are “very likely” or “moderately likely” to vote for McCallum, while 37 per cent feel the same about Hepner.

“What is interesting to us at this point, because it’s so early in the race, is trying to make sense of whether McCallum’s comeback is really something that is going to be supported by a lot of people. And to see him at 40 per cent certainly suggests that he’s connecting well, even though he’s been away for quite some time,” says Canseco.

He adds voters seem to like McCallum’s call for Surrey to move to the ward system, but aren’t as keen on Hepner’s proposal for a Ferris Wheel by the Pattullo Bridge.

One name not included in the survey is Councillor Barinder Rasode, as she has yet to officially to join the mayor’s race.
