Ethan Hawke, Michael Winterbottom add projects to Toronto film festival

TORONTO – A documentary by Oscar-nominated actor Ethan Hawke and features from Michael Winterbottom and Kevin Smith are among the new titles added to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Festival organizers say that Hawke’s “Seymour: An Introduction,” about pianist Seymour Bernstein, will screen at the festival that runs Sept. 4 to 14.

Hawke will also be seen onscreen at the fest with the previously announced “Good Kill,” co-starring Zoe Kravitz and January Jones.

Meanwhile, Winterbottom’s “The Face of an Angel,” which stars Kate Beckinsale and is inspired by the killing of British student Meredith Kercher in Italy, will have its world premiere in the Masters program.

And Smith’s horror adventure “Tusk,” starring Justin Long as a podcaster held captive in the backwoods of Canada, will screen in the Midnight Madness program.

Also in Midnight Madness is “What We Do in the Shadows” from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement of “Flight of the Conchords” fame. The two wrote, directed and star as vampires trying to fit into modern society.

Other notable docs in the fest include “Merchants of Doubt” from “Food, Inc.” director Robert Kenner. It looks at “professional skeptics” who are hired to cast doubt on climate change.

And “Tales of the Grim Sleeper” from Nick Broomfield examines the case of the notorious serial killer Lonnie Franklin in Los Angeles.
