Whitecaps and Fire play to goalless draw

BRIDGEVIEW, IL (NEWS1130) – David Ousted turned aside two shots to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season for Vancouver, as the Whitecaps tied the Chicago Fire 0-0. The result gives the ‘Caps four straight draws.

The Whitecaps held a slight edge in play, holding just over 51 per cent of possession, and taking 13 shots to Chicago’s 10.

Vancouver’s best chance of the game came early in the second half. Eric Hurtado found himself in alone on Chicago keeper Sean Johnson, but his touch let him down as the ball got too far in front of him, allowing Johnson to easily block the shot.

Of the four straight draws for the Whitecaps, three have come on the road. The streak began on Jul. 26, with a 1-1 tie with Toronto FC, followed up three days later with a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah. The ‘Caps also tied FC Dallas 2-2 at BC Place on Sunday.

The result leaves Vancouver out of a playoff spot in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. The Whitecaps (6W-11D-4L) have 29 points through 21 matches, and sit just one point back of FC Dallas for the fifth and final post-season position.

The Whitecaps now get a bit of a rest as they don’t play again until Aug. 10, when they host Sporting Kansas City.
