Terry Fox named the most-admired British Columbian

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As we get ready to celebrate BC Day this long weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on who and what makes the province special.

A new poll has named the most admired British Columbians of all time.

Terry Fox captured our hearts his Marathon of Hope; he was the top pick by far in the Insights West poll, followed by environmentalist and activist David Suzuki.

In third is BC’s longest-serving premier and a man that helped shape modern BC: W.A.C. Bennett. Inspirational Paralympian Rick Hansen and billionaire entrepreneur Jim Pattison fill out the top five.

People were also asked which word they would use to describe what makes our province unique. The top choice was “beautiful.” Maybe that’s why 84 per cent believe they will stay in BC for the rest of their lives, and two-thirds think their kids will live here, too.

Two thirds of British Columbians think we have more in common with the people of Seattle and Portland than with those in Toronto or Montreal. But so much for dreams of an independent Cascadia — only 13 per cent believe BC would be better off as its own country.
