Blame people for climate change: Canadian research

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It is a topic that always sparks a heated debate: are glaciers around the world melting due to natural causes, or because of human activity?  Canadian researchers say they have new evidence which finally answers the question.

Graham Cogley from Trent University is the co-author of a new study in the journal Science, and he says their findings are clear.  “The glaciers are shrinking faster and it’s mainly our fault.”

The study points to human activity and specifically to our use of fossil fuels as the reason behind the shrinking glaciers.

It states this is pumping large amounts of heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Seth Borenstein says scientists used state of the art computer model simulations to come up with their conclusion.

“They did them over and over and over again.  They did them with all the factors they can think of on natural and man-made, and then they did it with just taking out the man-made ones, like global warming and soot and land use.  And low and behold there is a difference and that difference is what we caused.  Then they checked it to see does this match with the reality we’ve seen over the years and it did.”

The study suggests we do not have to look far for an example of their new findings.  It says this is already happening throughout Western Canada, in Banff, Jasper and Yoho national parks.
