Canadian Mounties still being bullied: Liberal MP

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Despite assurances of action by the RCMP’s top brass, one Liberal MP says a culture of harassment and bullying continues to plague the force.

MP Judy Sgro wants BC to lead a judicial inquiry because she says the province has has the highest number of people contacting her feeling harassed or sexually abused. “I think it’s time that there was a real inquiry into what’s going on within the RCMP when it comes to their own members and how they’re treated because this is not a new thing. This has been going on for a very long time.”

Sgro, along with Senator Grant Mitchell, hosted four private sessions between April and October 2013 asking Mounties to share their experiences.

“When I had the round table in Vancouver it was the only time that I opened it up to males as well as females done separately and I had many men come there and some break down.”

She says a report outlining findings from the cross-country sessions will be presented to Parliament in September.

“If the officers within the service are not happy, their minds are not necessarily on the safety of the general public and that’s not a good thing. So I think we need to remove anything that is preventing them from doing the best job they can.”

She says she has been told of recurring incidents where superiors dismissed claims as hazing, character building or “just the guys blowing off steam.”
