Prof urging people to stop Fraser Surrey Docks expansion immediately

DELTA (NEWS1130) – Coal is a fuel of the last century according to one expert who says the fight against expansion at Fraser Surrey Docks needs to continue.

This comes as the project got approval from Port Metro Vancouver yesterday.

SFU health sciences professor Tim Takaro says we have to stop using coal at some point, and this is a great opportunity to apply society’s brakes.

“Many communities in the United States have already done this and have refused to transport this material. It’s highly polluting and we have to stop our addiction to these cheap fossil fuels. We should not do it just for the money,” he says.

But with construction set to start next fall, the question remains whether it’s realistic to stop the project.

“It’s really a matter of governance isn’t it? So it’s akin to the pipeline issues that are being fought right now by the city of Burnaby and the City of Vancouver,” explains Takaro.

Anita Huberman with the Surrey Board of Trade says this project is a major opportunity not only for the region but for the country.

“We feel, our opinion is especially from a business and economic lens but also from an environmental lens that Fraser Surrey Docks will manage this project responsibly on all fronts,” says Huberman.

She says her group has assessed it inside and out and is confident Fraser Surrey Docks will manage it in a safe manner.

“All of the concerns that different groups have put forward, they [FSD] have put in place measures to try and mitigate any environmental impacts,” she adds.
