Whitecaps look to conquer Galaxy in California

By

CARSON, CA (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps (7-4-12) find themselves back in California Saturday night, this time to take on the LA Galaxy (10-5-7) in a match that could have a big impact on the Western Conference playoff race.

The ‘Caps played to a scoreless draw against Chivas last weekend at the StubHub Center in Carson, and will face a stiffer opponent in the Galaxy – a team they have not beaten away from BC Place. LA is 7-1-2 all time against Vancouver in MLS play.

Vancouver holds the final playoff spot in the west, only four points back of the Galaxy. The players understand how important every point is at this stage of the season.

“We know the three points are important.” said Vancouver’s Russell Teibert.

“Whether we’re home or away, we’re going to push for the win like we tried to do with Chivas. That’s what we have to do when we go play the Galaxy.”

Vancouver has been great on the defensive side of the field. Goalkeeper David Ousted is working on a shutout streak of 321 minutes, but he’s been quick to point out the work of the group in front of him.

“I think we’ve defended well, clearing when we need to.” Ousted said.

“Especially the back four has been solid. The midfield has helped out a lot by not allowing those runs to get through.”

Vancouver’s defenders will try to impede the progress of LA’s Robbie Keane, (22 total goals/assists) Landon Donovan, and Gyasi Zardes – those three players have combined to score 28 of the Galaxy’s 39 goals this season.

Saturday’s match is the last of the regular season between the two clubs, with the Galaxy winning one. The other ended in a tie at BC Place. LA won its last game, a 4-3 comeback triumph over Colorado on August 20th.

The Whitecaps return home August 30th to face the Portland Timbers at BC Place.
