BCTF and province unlikely to reach a deal in time for Sept 2: labour expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What are the chances that teachers and the government can come to a deal in time for next week? A local labour expert is playing down that possibility.

Limited negotiation over the summer is an indicator a deal between teachers and the government isn’t imminent, says Mark Thompson with UBC.

“There’s quite a bit to be done and we have only four or five days left to do it. And there’s no sign yet that either side is willing to make a move that would be a breakthrough,” he tells us.

“The fact that [mediator] Vince Ready, who is highly experienced at these things, hasn’t stepped in is a good sign that that hasn’t happened yet,” he adds.

Thompson adds the lack of negotiation on the teacher’s part this summer isn’t surprising, given its their time off.

The BCTF and government negotiators are meeting in Victoria today. Classes are supposed to be back in session on September 2nd.
