People in Surrey keeping windows locked after girl sexually assaulted

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Despite the warm weather, a lot of people in Surrey slept with their windows closed following warnings from police about a frightening sexual assault on a little girl in their neighbourhood.

Police issued a warning to the public yesterday after the incident near 99th Avenue and 128th Street on Wednesday night. A nine-year-old girl was lured out of her window, taken to a nearby park, and sexually assaulted.

Mounties have asked people to secure or bar their windows and lock their doors.

Many people in the area are feeling uneasy.

“Absolutely. Knowing that somebody is out there… having my windows open in the summer time… No, it doesn’t make me feel very comfortable at all,” says one neighbour.

It was a hot and stuffy night for some folks.

“It gets muggy inside your house. So, the first thing you do is open the window. But who thinks that you’re going to have a predator coming into your house? That’s shocking. It really is. That’s terrible,” says another neighbour.

“We have them open a little bit, but we’ve got a piece of wood in — they couldn’t open it. We’ve also got those safety things on our windows,” says another woman.

But one man admits he did sleep with windows wide open. “I live on the third floor so I don’t worry… I’m a light sleeper and I’ve got a club in my room, so it doesn’t bother me.”

Investigators are still searching for a suspect. No description has been released.
