Western nations should do more to support Ukraine: international security expert

By

UKRAINE (NEWS1130) – A day after thousands of Russian troops entered Ukraine, the president has announced plans for mandatory conscription to help confront the threat.

An international security expert says western nations could and should be doing more to help. But Andre Gerolymatos doesn’t think the west will do more.

He thinks Russia’s military power and it’s willingness to use that power against Ukraine or any other nation that intervenes, is behind that.

Gerolymatos points out when a sanction is imposed, China compensates.

“The only way to stop Putin is to use military force, which no one in the west is prepared to do.”

He adds attention is on other parts of the world. “The Middle East is exploding in so many different directions, with ISIS on the rampage. That is fixating American and European foreign policy.”

Gerolymatos adds western nations should have used diplomatic options from the beginning, saying they’ve “demonized” Russian president Vladimir Putin to the point where they have given him few options.

So, what can the west do now? Gerolymatos says it can have an honest dialogue with Russia about a solution that works for both sides.

He feels that would mean Ukraine staying in Russia’s military sphere of influence, but still being free to run itself without Russian intervention.
