Playland extending its hours during teachers’ strike

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Parents looking for a place to bring their children during the teachers’ strike are getting a helping hand.

A decision has been made to open Playland for a few days this month.

Laura Ballance with the PNE says they have been flooded with phone calls since news broke that talks between the BCTF and the province have reached an impasse. “Over the last 72 hours we have started to receive a large volume of calls from parents asking if there were any plans to extend the Playland hours.”

She says they had to find a way to accomodate the need while not jeopardizing the very popular Fright Night events.

“We’re going to stay open the next three Fridays, as well as the next three weekends. But really, the three Fridays are in direct response to parents’ inquiries,” she explains.

Ballance says Playland will be open on those Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parents don’t need to register before bringing their children for the day.

She says it’s too early to say if they’ll keep Playland open if the dispute continues. “I guess we will re-evaluate as we get further in and see how the next three Fridays work out. If the dispute is still ongoing then I am sure we will take another look at it.”
