Students protest education dispute outside Vancouver Art Gallery

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Over 100 students in Vancouver are protesting the teachers’ dispute outside the Vancouver Art Gallery today.

Those in attendance say they’re not taking sides, they just want classes to resume.

Emma is heading into Grade 10 and says the situation is getting more frightening the longer it goes on. “For mid-terms and finals, if we have to cram our curriculum into a shorter amount of time it’s going to be troublesome.”

She says she’s worried about the whole year if the dispute drags on.

“This year’s going to be really stressful. Since they’re taking time away right now they probably are going to take it away from our time off the rest of the year, so that’s a big issue.”

Dunia was looking forward to her first day of Grade 9, but instead found herself braving the wet weather with some of her classmates.

She says the longer they’re out of class, the worse off they’ll be when they do eventually go back.

“I feel as though it’s easier if you’ve been at school for a longer time to know where your classes are and know where everything is. So, to all of a sudden have your time table thrown at you and have to scramble to find out where everything is, it’s a little annoying.”

There has been no indication when the BC Teachers’ Federation and the province will get back to the negotiating table.
