Protest walk to end to the teachers’ strike

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Dozens of parents and kids took part in a ‘walk for the right to education for our children.’ The demonstration is aimed at showing the teachers’ and government how education is a priority for families. The group walked through the park holding signs saying things like ‘Children Need Education’ and ‘BC Kids Can’t Wait!’

Meera Gill organized the event to get parents off the couch in an attempt to put pressure on both the teachers and government to get a deal done. She’s urging parents to get involved. “They are upset and they are talking at their dinner table. We want them to come out. It’s not a secret that the government or the union know that the parents are upset, but obviously there’s no urgency that’s been added to this.”

She told parents in both English and Punjabi to phone, text, and e-mail everyone they know to bring attention to the issue.

Lucky Gill is an activist in the Indo-Canadian Community, who thinks language shouldn’t be a barrier in getting folks involved. “English is not their (some parents) first language but every parent I believe understands that the importance of the education. It’s very important. Kids should not miss any days. Both sides really need to come into the shoes of where the kids are standing.”

Another protest is set for the same place on Sunday at 5pm.
