Vancouver School Board deeply disappointed with rejection of binding arbitration

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver School Board believes children could have returned to classes this week, if not for the provincial government.

Chair Patti Bacchus says the decision to reject the BCTF‘s proposal for binding arbitration is frustrating and deeply disappointing.

“This is taking an incredible toll on students and their families and it’s simply not fair. For the government to stand back and say ‘no, we’re not going to do that’ without coming up with a better option and solution is really a failure to all of those families,” she explains.

Bacchus says she can understand why the BC Teachers’ Federation doesn’t want to go back to school while negotiations continue.

“They have a history with this government where they have had their rights violated, they have won two court cases. I can see that trust is in short supply and I don’t see any reason why they would feel that has changed,” she says.

Bacchus adds the VSB knew in July this was going to be a long dispute and it asked both sides to agree to binding arbitration then.
