Federal NDP promises national transit strategy, if elected

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A SkyTrain along the Broadway corridor could be closer to a reality if the federal opposition takes over office in Ottawa next year.

Vancouver-Kingsway NDP MP Don Davies says Canada is the only country in the G8 that does not have a national transit strategy in place to move goods and people in an efficient way.

“The New Democrats in 2015 will make a national transit strategy a priority and the people of the Lower Mainland are counting on the senior level of government to help make that a reality,” he says.

Coquitlam NDP MP Fin Donnelly maintains the Conservatives have not made transportation a priority.

“[We would] work with the provinces, municipalities and first nations to provide long term, predictable accessible funding over a 15 to 20-year period,” he vows.

Donnelly adds the party would work with municipalities, provinces, and First Nations to ensure transit needs are met.

The NDP is promising at least $420 million to fund the plan as Metro Vancouver mayors try to convince Victoria how best to pay for much needed upgrades in the region, and what those upgrades should be.

A referendum is set for the spring.
