Whitecaps move into playoff spot with win over Earthquakes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pedro Morales was involved in both goals as the Vancouver Whitecaps snapped a four-match winless streak with a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place.

The Whitecaps entered the night having not scored in all four of the games in their winless streak. They had last scored in a 2-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Aug. 10.

Vancouver played a terrific opening half and was rewarded for its hard work shortly before half-time. In the 39th minute, big defender Kendall Waston was fouled inside the box off a Whitecaps free-kick. Morales stepped up to the spot and buried a goal into the left side of the net, his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Waston and Morales teamed up for the second goal of the game in the 56th minute. Morales sent a corner kick into the box, which Waston went up for and headed home for his first goal since joining the Whitecaps last month.

The Whitecaps outshot San Jose 6-0 in the first half. The Earthquakes registered the only shot on target in the second half but it was easily stopped by David Ousted. Ousted picked up his second straight shutout, and league-leading ninth clean sheet of the season.

With the win, Vancouver jumps ahead of Portland into the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Whitecaps now lead the Timbers by two points with the same amount of games played.

Vancouver will be right back in action on the weekend, visiting FC Dallas on Saturday.
