TORONTO – Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. Here are some reactions from his family and peers:
____
Coun. Doug Ford (the mayor’s brother):
“My brother has been diagnosed with cancer and I can’t begin to share how devastating this has been for Rob and our family. He is an incredible person, husband, father, brother and son and he remains upbeat and determined to fight this.
Rob has always been so strong for all of us and now I ask us all to be strong for him. Your kind words and well wishes mean everything to him right now. Rob will beat this. On behalf of Rob, his wife Renata, their children, and the entire Ford family, thank you all so much for your continued support and prayers.”
____
Prime Minister Stephen Harper:
“The thoughts and prayers of all Canadians are with Mr. Ford and his family at this difficult time. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery and are certain that he will take on this fight with all of his characteristic tenacity and energy.”
____
John Tory (mayoral candidate):
“There are many, many people out there who’ve had chemotherapy and have had surgery and radiation and all kinds of things. Thank God they’ve survived cancer and gone on to have lives that are very long thereafter and so I’m optimistic that’s going to be the result for Rob Ford.”
____
Olivia Chow (mayoral candidate):
“It’s really sad that Rob Ford has this diagnosis but I know he’s strong, he’s a fighter and I know he can beat these cancer cells.”
