Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts seeking federal Conservative nomination

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Speculation over the political future of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts can end.

Watts will seek the federal Conservative nomination in the riding of South Surrey-White Rock.

She says she took a couple of months to reflect and think about the issues that are really important to her. “Not only within the context of the City of Surrey, but also on the global front. Looking at those issues and how we can carry our voice forward in terms of rapid transit, rail safety, and movement of goods.”

Watts says the economy is always a consideration. “We’ve got the lowest residential taxes in the region, lowest spending per capita, and named four years in a row ‘best place to invest in British Columbia.'”

“When I looked at what was going on the global front, it’s really a cause for concern. When you look at what is going on in Russia, the issues in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, the conflict between Israel and Palestine. All of those significantly impact us,” she adds. “There really is a place and a leadership role that Canada should be playing, and is playing. That for me was really important.”

“When I asked myself who do I want at the helm to be dealing with these serious issues and making the tough decisions, there was only one answer and that was Prime Minister Harper,” Watts explains.

Surrey Councillor Barinder Rasode calls it great news for her city.

“I think Mayor Dianne Watts, as she makes the transition from leading the City of Surrey to representing Surrey at the federal arena, is good news for Surrey residents,” she says.

Watts has served three consecutive terms as Surrey’s mayor.

The next federal election is October 29, 2015.
