Province starting to streamline the home inspection industry

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The home inspection industry has always been a bit of a legal grey area that can often leave home-owners without much recourse if they find a problem.

However, the province is starting to streamline the industry, with one body governing and certifying inspectors, down from four. Consumer Protection BC also has a greater role in licensing and enforcement.

Inspector Hugh Poole says it’s necessary. “This whole industry is so unregulated, you basically can’t do a damn thing about anything.”

“I guess that is an improvement. At least they’ll have a place to start attending and addressing some of these issues,” he adds.

Other inspectors like Ted Gilmour remain skeptical.

“This new amalgamation is not going to change anything. The guys have already established their methods of operating. So it doesn’t matter what kind of rules [or] whatever you put on it — guys are going to do what they’ve always been doing,” he tells us.

However, he admits this idea seems to be a good one. “I suspect it might be as better model. One umbrella, one standard. I can get behind that.”

The province hopes to have the new standards in place by the end of next year.
